With only 80-90 years’ worth of oil left on the planet, the latest trend among car manufacturers is going “green”. Lotus Engineering has decided to join the alternative fuel movement, with the Exige 270E for their latest entry. On the outside, it looks just like a regular Exige, but it’s actually an environment-friendly version of the sleek, high-performance sports car.

This is in fact Lotus’ 2nd green entry–the 270E’s predecessor, 265E, boasts up to 265 horsepower (hence the name) on a mixture of gasoline and bio-ethanol. The 270E takes this concept one large step further: apart from the 5HP increase, it welcomes another form of fuel–methanol–derived from atmospheric CO2. This ability to use three different types of fuel earns it the “TriFuel” moniker.

To drive the point home, Lotus has decided on a mostly green-and-white color motif for the clean car. The white represents cleanliness and green because it’s environment-friendly. Embellished across the car’s body is a three-color stripe–yellow, black and green –representing the tri-fuel capability. The interior is also painted in these colors, which might look unappealing to some, but keep in mind that this is the most powerful Exige and the cleanest one too so it can take its liberties.

It is also the most powerful version of the Exige so far. The 270E goes from zero to 60mph (96kph) in a mere 3.88 seconds, and boasts a top speed of 158mph (255km/h). It can run on any mixture of the three types of fuel mentioned earlier (methanol, bio-ethanol, gasoline), which becomes especially important since it can save big on gasoline costs (atmospheric CO2, from which methanol is extracted, is free and will not run out like oil), and that it’s environment-friendly.

Lotus itself is deep in research for sustainable fuels. They expect the technology for massively extracting liquid methanol to be available in four to five years, but the supply infrastructure investment and government actions might take three to four times longer.
